Having always thought that Madonna’s absurd British accent was a late 90s thing, this video came as something of a surprise. Though she only confirms her hometown and the name of her next track, there’s a distinctly posh twang to her breathless tones in what youtube tells me is her first appearance on Italian TV.
Perhaps she felt the need to put on some airs and graces in order to live up to the stage presence of her host, a man so nonplussed he looks like he can barely summon the energy to lift his microphone. And you can afford to be that effortless when your sweater/bow tie combo is doing all the heavy lifting, really quite spectacular.
